Systemic Functional Linguistics as a Basic Theory in Translating English Wordplays

Wordplay are exploited in order to bring a communicatively significant confrontation of two or more linguistic structures. Translating wordplays in English text into Indonesian is difficult; on the one hand, translator has to recognize the use of wordplays in rendering a defined effect and the characteristics of translated text. This paper is designed to explore the importance of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) related to translating English wordplay into Indonesian, particularly the strategies of dealing with those wordplays and its application in solving problems effectively.SFL is most appropriately applicable to text analysis especially wordplay analysis because it is constructed for the sake of text analysis

In recent years, the humanities and particularly linguistics have gained an increasing influence within the field of business communication. Business communication has traditionally been seen as a discipline within the social sciences, and for instance copy writing has conventionally been an issue for advertising agencies or advertising departments, not an area for academic research. In this article I shall demonstrate how a linguistic theory as Systemic Functional Linguistics is developing within the studies of business communication at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. I shall argue why Systemic Functional Linguistics is useful for business communication in general, and how Systemic Functional Linguistics can be used not only for copy writing but also for communication analysis, organizational culture analysis and communication and campaign planning

This special issue of the International Journal of Language Studies comprises a selection of papers presented during the 41st International Systemic Functional Congress and X Latin-American Systemic Functional Congress, held in Facultad de Filosofia y Letras, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, in April 2014. The theme of the conference was "Systemic Functional Linguistics and Language Education: Novel applications of well-established and evolving lines of enquiry to language education theory and practice". Some of the main fields of the congress were language education and language in education, child language development, language typology, register and genre theory, appraisal theory, discourse analysis, multimodality and multimodal literacy, language and knowledge, and SFL and other language theories. The papers presented in this special issue reveal some of the many relationships between Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Education

Textual Analysis through Systemic Functional Linguistics

    Get PDF
This paper primarily attempts to provide readers with a means of analyzing texts by using an approach that is considered important by applied linguists, that of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). This work identified the similarities and differences between two texts, a movie review and a news article, that dealt with the same topic, namely, the movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. In identifying the texts’ similarities and differences, the Systemic Functional Linguistic principles of Tenor/Interpersonal Metafunction and Field/Experiential Metafunction were applied. From the interpersonal metafunction analysis, it can be concluded that both texts share similar moods and modalities.  However, a closer inspection would reveal that Text 1 appears to negotiate a positive review of the film through an extensive demonstration of declarative statements that talk about the merits of the film and that of the director’s while Text 2 is more of a reportage of relevant information and interviews from the film.  In terms of the Experiential metafunction, Text 1 delves on material and relational processes that advance the film, the director, and the characters, whereas Text 2 differs as it focuses more on advancing the film while putting little emphasis on the director and the movie characters

    Get PDF
This study intends to contribute to linguistics studies in systemic functional linguistics topic. The problem formulations discussed are (1) The transitivity and metafunctions found in dark memes on the 9GAG site, and (2) The transitivity and metafunctions representation in 9GAG dark memes. This study uses Kress & Leeuwen's theory of three metafunctions and Haliday's transitivity systemic functional linguistics (SFL). This study uses a qualitative descriptive method using a case study approach, and it is completed by describing the data and information obtained. The writer uses books and scientific journals, data sources are downloaded from the 9GAG website, and the final stage will conclude the analysis results. In this study, the data collection is using the observation and documentation method. Based on this study's results, ideational, interpersonal, textual, and several transitivity processes are found. Also, dark memes are entertainment communication platforms that have negative representations. Visual and verbal modes can make it easier for viewers (those who see dark memes) to capture the representation conveyed by the writer. This study suggests that readers understand the more in-depth representation of a dark meme by using systemic functional linguistics theory. Therefore, readers can know more about the information to be received.  Keywords: meme, metafunction language, systemic functional linguistic, transitivity. &nbsp

This article focuses on the concept of 'grammatical metaphor' as it has been introduced in the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. It first explains 'metaphor' in general, as it is traditionally known. In contrast to this, grammatical metaphor is explained as a grammatical resource in language. Two types of grammatical metaphor, ideational metaphor and interpersonal metaphor, are explained and illustrated
